Calculation Formula:
Brick Area = (Brick Length + Mortar) × (Brick Height + Mortar)
Bricks per Sq Ft = 144 ÷ Brick Area
Total Bricks = Net Wall Area × Bricks per Sq Ft
Mortar Volume = Wall Area × Joint Thickness × 1.3 (waste factor)
Weight = Bricks × 4.5 lbs (average brick weight)
Installation Notes:
Installation guidelines will be displayed based on selected brick size and wall type.

Planning to build a brick wall, fence, or structure? Use our Brick Quantity Calculator to estimate how many bricks you’ll need based on the wall’s dimensions, brick size, and mortar gap. Whether you’re working on a small garden wall or an entire house facade, this tool gives you a fast and accurate brick count.

Skip the guesswork and avoid material shortages or excess—calculate the exact number of bricks required before you start your construction project.

How to Calculate the Number of Bricks

The basic formula is:

Total Bricks = Wall Area ÷ Brick Area (including mortar gap)

Step-by-step:

  1. Measure the wall height and width to get total wall area (in sq ft or sq m)
  2. Calculate the area of one brick including the mortar gap
  3. Divide total wall area by brick area to get the number of bricks
  4. Add 5–10% extra bricks for breakage and cuts

Brick Calculation Formula

Wall Area = Height × Length

Brick Area = (Length + mortar) × (Height + mortar)

Bricks Needed = Wall Area ÷ Brick Area

Standard Brick Sizes

Type Size (mm) Size (inches)
Modular Brick190 × 90 × 907.48 × 3.54 × 3.54
Standard Brick (US)194 × 92 × 577.625 × 3.625 × 2.25
UK Brick215 × 102.5 × 658.46 × 4.03 × 2.56

Most brick estimates also include a 10 mm (0.39 in) mortar joint around each brick.

Number of Bricks Per Square Meter / Square Foot

The average values below assume standard brick size with 10 mm mortar:

Unit Brick Estimate
1 sq meterApproximately 50–60 bricks
1 sq footApproximately 7–8 bricks

Brick Quantity Estimation Tips

  • Add 5% extra bricks for small jobs, or 10% for large projects
  • Account for window and door openings (subtract area)
  • Use consistent mortar thickness (usually 10 mm)
  • Consider brick pattern (stretcher bond, Flemish, etc.) which affects layout
  • Check local brick sizes as they may vary by country

FAQs About Brick Quantity

How many bricks do I need per square meter?

On average, you’ll need about 50 to 60 bricks per square meter for standard-sized bricks with mortar.

How many bricks in 100 square feet?

Roughly 700 to 800 bricks are required for a 100 sq ft wall, depending on brick size and mortar gap.

How much mortar is needed for brickwork?

For every 1,000 bricks, you’ll typically need about 7–8 cubic feet of mortar (around 3–4 bags of cement mixed with sand).

Should I add extra bricks in my estimate?

Yes, always add 5% for breakage and cutting. For larger jobs or complex patterns, increase that to 10% or more.

What’s the most common brick size?

The most commonly used size globally is 190 × 90 × 90 mm, but this varies slightly depending on region and type (modular, non-modular, etc).
